We were not able to explore process automation fully during our process definition study. We did run some APPL/A code in phase one of the study. We found that a large amount of detailed code was needed to allow automation and guidance of the process. APPL/A does not provide tools to assist in process automation, such as a scheduling tool. In phases two and three we concentrated on process understandability and improvement goals. We felt that understandability was especially important because none of the other goals of improvement, management, and automation, are possible without understanding of the process. We did not use the APPL/A notation in these phases. None of the other notations allowed process automation.
